Button & Sprung mattress review: is it worth buying?

In our latest Adventures on Foam, we test out Button & Sprung's Wensleydale mattress to see if it's worth committing to

You get what you pay for with Button & Sprung's Wensleydale pocket sprung mattress. With 32,100 springs spread over 15 layers, the mattress is deeply comfortable and designed to support and hold your body in any position. All the retailer's mattresses are made by hand in their Yorkshire workshop with the finest natural fillings including cashmere, silk, wool and hemp. Through a visit to the showroom on Queenstown Road you can test out the different mattresses and varying tensions. Trying a mattress before you buy is such a good idea as the right mattress varies from person to person depending on their weight and sleeping position. I was left in the dedicated mattress room for a few minutes on my own to lie on the different tensions and eventually, I settled on the Wensleydale. It felt immediately comfortable being soft yet supportive and cocooning of my lower back, holding my spine in a neutral position. I suffer from slight scoliosis and am constantly battling lower back pain and after a couple of nights with this mattress at home I felt an immediate release. While the mattress feels incredibly comfortable and soft when you first lie on it, the eight layers of hand-teased natural fillings and six layers of the most advanced micro pocket springs and core springs at its heart means that your spine is perfectly aligned.

MAY WE SUGGEST: Emma Hybrid Premium Mattress review: is it worth buying?

After a few weeks of using this mattress at home, I'm sleeping a lot better, waking less at night and not tossing and turning as much. It has been the best investment for my sleep and also for my sensitive back. My partner, who is a front sleeper and therefore is used to a firmer mattress, also finds it amazing. As an added bonus, the sheer number of springs means that every movement is absorbed so I don't notice my partner turning over in the night.

There are two levels of support to choose from for this mattress; ‘Medium-Soft’ or ‘Medium’, I went for the ‘Medium-Soft’ which offers the right support for both myself and my partner. The mattress is double-sided, meaning that it can be rotated and flipped over with the seasons to benefit from the warmer side in winter and the cooler side in summer. For the warmer side, the insulating properties of high quality British wool and luxury cashmere, combine with the sumptuous feel of super soft silk and cashmere to keep you in a warm, winter cocoon. On the other side of the mattress the longer, finer threads of Egyptian cotton, combined with mohair, help to keep you cool and fresh in summer.

Button & Sprung's Wensleydale mattress: is it worth buying?

The co-founder of Button & Sprung, Adam Back, is passionate about having no foam mattresses in their range. Foam mattresses not only make you at least 3-5 degrees hotter when you sleep but they can't be recycled at the end of their life. Button & Sprung pride themselves on making pocket sprung mattresses filled with natural materials which can be taken apart and the materials recycled and the metal springs melted down and recycled at the end of the mattress' life.
