The deeply appealing bedroom in knitwear designer Anna Phillips' Sussex house.

Dean Hearne

I am lucky enough to be the owner of a rather smart, many-layered memory foam mattress, so it might surprise you to learn that some weeks ago I began shopping around for a mattress topper. Why, you might ask, would I need a topper if the mattress is so good? Well, not only was I keen to find a way to protect my mattress, but I had also read about some toppers which offer a few exciting features sadly missing from it. One topper in particular was very appealing: the Emma Premium Mattress Topper. It promised unrivalled levels of temperature-regulation, which for someone who is almost always either too hot or too cold during the night, made it the topper for me.

Emma Premium Mattress Topper

The Premium topper is one of two that Emma offers: the other, less deluxe (and more affordable) option, the Flip, is soft on one side and firm on the other, giving you the luxury to alternate as you wish. The selling point of the Premium topper, however, is it's ability to help you regulate your temperature (though its thick, ‘comfort foam’ layer is also immensely supportive). Prices start at £290 for the single and go up to £492 for a super king, so it's not a cheap bit of kit. It arrives promptly - within just two days of ordering - via Evri delivery which diligently kept me updated on the timings via text and email. The box was surprisingly small given the size and weight of the topper itself, but it was easy to unwrap from its casing, after which it slowly began to inflate itself. There are no instructions provided as to how long to wait until sleeping on the mattress topper, but I would suggest unwrapping in the morning, allowing the topper as much time as possible to air out and thus getting rid of any unpleasant packaging smells.

Though pricey, it does offer just as much comfort as an equivalently superior mattress, but at a lower price, making it a brilliant way to upgrade your sleep routine without forking out for a whole new mattress. I can also confirm that the promised temperature-regulating features are indeed present and highly effective. Gone are the nights spent kicking off the duvet, having cocooned myself, freezing, underneath it just hours earlier. What's more, Emma is currently offering a 17% discount, so now is the time to snap it up.
